Most Common Kenmore Washer Error Codes

• F01 / F1: Main control board fault – unplug the washer for several minutes and restart. If the code returns, the electronic control board may need inspection or replacement.
• F02 / F21: Long drain error – clean the drain pump filter, inspect the drain hose for kinks, and check for coins, lint, or debris blocking the pump.
• F05: Water temperature sensor issue – check the temperature sensor, wiring harness, and hot/cold water supply connections.
• F06: Motor speed or drive system error – reduce the load size, restart the washer, and inspect the motor control board, drive belt, or motor wiring if the error continues.
• F20: No water detected – make sure both water supply valves are open, clean inlet valve screens, and check hose pressure.
• F22 / F26: Door lock or door switch problem – close the door firmly, clean the latch area, and inspect the door lock assembly if the washer will not start.
• LF: Long fill – water is entering too slowly. Check water pressure, inlet hoses, faucet valves, and inlet screens.
• LD: Long drain – check drain hose height, clean the drain pump, and inspect for blocked drain lines.
• OL: Overloaded washer – remove items, redistribute clothes, and restart the cycle.
• UL: Unbalanced load – rearrange heavy items, level the washer, and run a drain/spin cycle again.

Top Load Kenmore Washer Problems

• Washer will not spin: Check the lid switch, drive belt, motor coupler, drain pump, and load balance. Older direct-drive Kenmore washers often use a motor coupler that can wear out.
• Washer fills but does not agitate: Inspect the lid switch, agitator dogs, drive block, motor coupler, belt, or transmission depending on the model.
• Water will not drain: Check the drain hose, pump, lid switch, and for small objects stuck in the pump or hose.
• Washer shakes or walks: Level the washer, adjust the feet, avoid overloading, and check suspension rods, springs, or balance ring on newer models.
• Agitator not moving: Replace worn agitator dogs or check the agitator cam kit if the upper agitator spins freely.

Front Load Kenmore Washer Problems

• Door will not unlock: Wait several minutes after the cycle ends, unplug the washer, check for standing water, and inspect the door lock assembly.
• Musty odor: Leave the door open after washing, wipe the door gasket, clean the detergent drawer, and run a monthly washer cleaning cycle.
• Water leaking from front: Clean the door boot seal, remove hair or lint from the gasket, and inspect the door glass and dispenser area.
• Excessive suds: Use HE detergent only and reduce detergent amount. Run a rinse/spin cycle to clear excess soap.
• Vibration during spin: Confirm shipping bolts were removed, level the washer, and avoid mixing heavy towels with light clothing.

Older Kenmore 70 / 80 / 90 Series Maintenance

• No agitation or spin: Inspect the motor coupler, lid switch, clutch, and drive block. These parts are common service points on classic direct-drive models.
• Slow or weak spin: Check the clutch, drive belt if equipped, basket drive, or worn suspension components.
• Water keeps filling: Check the water level pressure hose and water inlet valve. Turn off the water supply if the washer overfills.
• Timer does not advance: Inspect the timer contacts, lid switch, and cycle selector wiring.

Kenmore Elite and HE Washer Tips

• Cycle takes too long: High-efficiency washers may extend cycles when load balance, suds level, or water temperature is not ideal.
• Low water level: HE washers are designed to use less water. Use the correct cycle and avoid adding extra detergent.
• Detergent residue: Use HE detergent, clean the dispenser drawer, and avoid powdered detergent buildup in cold water cycles.

Safety note: Always unplug the washer before opening panels, checking the pump, inspecting wiring, or replacing parts. Turn off both hot and cold water supply valves before removing hoses. Never bypass the lid switch, door lock, or safety sensors.
